Your profile and why it matters

Your profile is not a CV sitting in a database. It is the input the matching engine uses every time someone searches for skills you have. If a field is empty, out of date, or vague, you are effectively invisible for the work that field would have surfaced you for, even if you are the best person in the building for it.

What actually gets matched

Three fields carry most of the weight:

• Skills - the specific capabilities you can point to, not job titles. “Financial modelling” and “SPA review” match; “senior consultant” does not.
• Availability - when you are free, and for how much of your time. This is read literally, so a stale entry showing you as booked will quietly remove you from every search until it is corrected.
• Location and mobility - where you are based and how far you are willing to travel or work remotely, which filters searches before skills are even considered.

Why a short accurate profile beats a long stale one

It is tempting to list every skill you have ever touched. Resist this. A long list dilutes the signal the ontology uses to rank you, and if half the entries are years out of date, a search that finds you may find you for work you no longer do or no longer want. Better to list the skills you would actually want to be staffed on, kept current, than an exhaustive history.

Availability is the one people forget

Of everything on your profile, availability decays fastest. A project ends, your calendar clears, but the field still says “booked until March” because nobody told ProFinda. The result is invisible to you - you simply stop appearing in searches - which is why it is worth building a habit, not relying on memory.

What to do this week

Open your profile and check three things: that your top five skills are listed and current, that your availability reflects reality today, and that your location and mobility preferences are set. This takes under ten minutes and is the single highest-value thing you can do before using any other part of ProFinda.
